This is the new portrait: no longer an immortalisation of the human form in its impeccable beauty but instead a desperate flirtation with mortality. Michalopoulou’s paintings are snapshots of impermanence, evanescent selfies, frames of a decay that is all-too-human, gestures of a politics of ageing and yet still desiring, passionately and incandescently. Welcome to the new selfie, welcome to your old tired self! This is what this work is about: a ruthless selfie that shows a history of pain and desire, a burden of unbelonging and wasted identity, a cadastre of unfulfilled dreams and some fulfilled nightmares. Michalopoulou is pushing us deeper into our most intimate battles. It sets up a space of encounter that defies taboos and social niceties. It is raw.
